For most of my life, I’ve been a book-in-hand kind of reader. And although I still love the feel of a hard-copy book in my hand, as a traveler it’s pretty impossible to be bringing hard-copy books everywhere that I go. In this post, I’ll be revealing why an Audible Subscription is worth it for travelers – and essential for travelers who are avid readers. It’s honestly a service that has changed the way I read for the better.
So let’s dive into the 6 reasons below (+ an extra bonus for any fellow ex-pats 😉).

1. Because you can’t read a book while boarding a plane
Think about your journey as a traveler for a second.
- Uber ride to the airport
- Checking into your flight (whether at a kiosk or at the desk)
- Waiting in the airport security line
- Walking to your gate
- Waiting in line to board the plane
- Boarding the plane
- Take off
- And if we’re talking road trips – I think it’s pretty safe to assume you WON’T be reading a book while driving
Sure you can read a physical book at some points during this journey. But there is going to be a lot of stop & go interruptions, and taking the book out and putting it away again.
Meanwhile, with an Audible audiobook (other than going through security) there isn’t a moment where you’d need to put your book on pause. From the time you leave your house to the time you land (or arrive in a car), you could have already finished a book! Or maybe two!
To me, this is the NUMBER ONE reason why an Audible Subscription is worth it for travelers.
2. Don’t have to lug around heavy books
If you’re an avid reader, chances are you rip through through several books on your travels and even more on long-term travel.
So the choice is either:
a.) lug around a bunch of books in your luggage or backpack taking up valuable space for other items
b.) use a Kindle which is a GREAT option BUT I personally have found it annoying to have ANOTHER electronic device to carry around with me in addition to my laptop, phone, camera, external charger, batteries etc.
c.) go without books.
I, unfortunately, fell into the latter category more often than not. I have spent the last 5 years on the road more than 80% of the time, which means I have read less over the past 5 years than ever before.
That’s until I subscribed to Audible earlier this year and I’ve already read 5+ books. I love how I can “read” while I’m taking a walk around a new city, eating at a restaurant solo, or sitting in a park people watching. It has basically changed the reading game for me!
3. Perfect entertainment for flights, trains, & long bus rides
Does anyone else have a hard time reading a hard-copy book while on a plane?! There’s something about trying to get comfortable, the neck strain, plus my eyes getting tired that makes me basically never want to physically open up a book and read on a flight. (Comment below on this post if you feel this too?!)
However, you know what totally appeals to me?! Sitting back, relaxing, closing my eyes, and listening to a story unfold.
HELLO, TOTAL RELAXATION.
4. Thousands of books at your fingertips (including a ton of travel fiction)
This kind of goes back to #2, but I love the option of popping on my phone and finding ANY book I could possibly want to read at any given moment.
Although I love many genres, I have this thing about reading fiction books about destinations I have either been to, am going to, or want to visit.
So for me, the Audible Library, which is full of travel fiction I love like The Alchemist, The Little Paris Bookshop, and Shanghai Girls is just another reason why an Audible Subscription is worth it for travelers 🙂
5. Free workouts, meditation & yoga for travelers on the go
An AMAZING added bonus you get with your Audible Subscription is access to their Audio Fitness Programs by Aaptiv for FREE!
In this library, you’ll find things like Rise & Shine Yoga Flows, Guided Motivational Runs, and Morning Meditations for Daily Magic.I’m currently doing the 21 Days of Meditation and these audio-guided sessions have brought SO much clarity and peace to my life!
It’s perfect for travelers who are trying to balance the go-go-go of travel with health & wellness.
6. Access to language resources for your next international trip!
And reason #6 why an Audible Subscription is worth it for travelers…it gives you access to language learning resources to help you get ready for your next international trip!!!
As travelers, I think it’s best practice to at least know some key phrases in the language of the country you are visiting (oh hey Duolingo).
And if you’re serious about language learning, Audible has some great resources like French Short Stories For Beginners, The Ultimate Guide For Beginners Who Want to Learn Italian, Learn Spanish in Your Car (or maybe in your case – on a plane!) and more.
BONUS REASON: as an ex-pat in Colombia, it’s nearly impossible to find the books I want in English, and shipping books from Amazon or other bookstores in the USA costs an arm and a leg. My solution: AUDIBLE!
And that my friends, is why an Audible Subscription is worth it for travelers 🙂 We’re on the go, constantly in motion, and having access to thousands of books right from our phones that we can listen to when in transit, while on the beach, or while exploring a new destination is such an advantage.
And don’t forget, you have a 30-day FREE Trial of Audible waiting for you!
If you don’t like it, you can cancel at any time, with no fees or costs. I hope you love it as much as I do though! Happy reading/listening!
