Just 30 min north of the surf-side, backpacker’s heaven town of Canggu by car, the famed (and rightfully so) Pura Tanah Lot is there, seemingly floating in the ocean for all to see.

Pura Tanah Lot is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to the gods of the sea with origins back to the fifteenth century, that still remains a site of religious significance to Balinese people today.

As a tourist, I was blown away by the natural beauty of this spectacular landmark, located just off the coast of Bali. I went during low-tide which takes the effect away of a “floating” temple, but gives you the opportunity to walk down on the beach and view this mysterious temple from a different perspective. I’ve heard that viewing Pura Tanah Lot during sunset is just remarkable, but it is the most crowded during those hours.

Although a very touristy destination, it’s hard to say that it spoiled my visit. I had never seen anything like it, and was very happy that I made the journey there to visit it. Even the surrounding grounds were beautiful, and it’s definitely worth taking a walk around to soak in the beauty of this temple complex.

Getting there: I took an Uber from Canggu and then asked the driver if he would keep the meter running and bring me to Ubud after. He agreed and even came with me on my self-guided tour! He took photos for me, and even posed in a few with me! Like I said in my last post, Uber is extremely frowned upon, but it really is the best way to get around Bali. My ride from Canggu to Tanah Lot, the hour and a half I spent at Tanah Lot, and the drive to my resort in Ubud, took 3 hours and cost 235,500 IDR (or 17.50 USD), which is basically unbeatable. I gave my driver, Abdul an additional tip for the 70km ride and it still cost less than hiring a private driver for the trip.

Entrance Fees: It costs 60,000IDR (4.50 USD) for foreign adult entrance, and although I should have paid for my driver’s local ticket (20,000 IDR) and parking for the Uber car (5,000 IDR) I think they let it go because my driver said he was just dropping me off. Instead he ended up joining me – oops!
